Acupuncture, done by a qualified practitioner, is safe and beneficial in pregnancy.

When Baby Settles Bottom-First

As your due date draws near, thoughts often turn to that first moment you’ll meet your baby. But sometimes, things don’t go exactly as planned. Around the third trimester, it’s quite common for babies to rest in a a breech baby. — with their feet or bottom pointing downward rather than the head.

This can bring up understandable feelings of worry or uncertainty. Yet, there are gentle, natural ways to support your baby’s ability to turn. One such approach is acupuncture and moxibustion for breech presentation — time-honoured methods within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that promote balance, relaxation, and energetic flow.

It’s never about forcing change. It’s about creating space — physically and energetically — for the body and baby to move naturally.

Understanding the Breech Position

In modern medicine, a breech position refers to when the baby’s bottom or feet are positioned to be born first. Many babies spontaneously turn on their own, but some need gentle assistance.

Your doctor might mention a medical procedure called External Cephalic Version (ECV), where they attempt to manually turn the baby. Before reaching that step, however, many women choose to explore natural approaches that work with the body’s own intelligence — such as acupuncture and moxibustion.

From a TCM perspective, a breech presentation reflects an imbalance in energy flow (Qi) — often connected to cold, tension, or stagnation in the pelvic area. By restoring warmth and flow, acupuncture and moxibustion may help the baby find the space to rotate naturally.

What Happens During a Breech Acupuncture Session

If you’ve never experienced acupuncture before, the process is deeply soothing. You’ll rest comfortably while very fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points — often around the feet and lower legs — areas associated with the Bladder meridian that influences uterine energy and pelvic balance.

The sensation is gentle — a light pressure, warmth, or tingling rather than pain. As you relax, your body releases tension, allowing the uterus to soften and Qi to flow more freely. Some mothers notice increased baby movement during or after the session — a beautiful sign of reconnection between mother and child.

The Gentle Warmth of Moxibustion

Moxibustion — or “moxa” for short — is the warming technique often paired with acupuncture. It involves burning a special herb (Artemisia vulgaris, or mugwort) near specific points on the body, most notably Bladder 67 (Zhiyin), located on the outer corner of the little toe.

The warmth from moxa feels like gentle sunlight — deeply relaxing and nurturing.

This heat helps:

• Stimulate uterine energy and circulation

• Encourage baby movement

• Relieve tension in the abdominal muscles

• Support hormonal and nervous system balance

Moxibustion is most effective when done between 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Many women continue short sessions at home after receiving professional guidance — transforming it into a nightly ritual of connection, warmth, and trust.

Creating Space for Your Baby to Move

Acupuncture and moxibustion support both physical and emotional readiness for birth. When your body relaxes, the uterus softens, the breath deepens, and energy begins to flow again.

These techniques also balance hormones, enhance pelvic circulation, and help calm the stress response — all of which create a nurturing environment for your baby to move naturally.

While results can vary, these gentle treatments have been trusted for centuries to encourage optimal fetal positioning safely and holistically.

A Calm, Natural Approach to Birth Preparation

Every pregnancy is unique, and there’s no single path that works for everyone.

What Acupuncture and moxibustion offer is more than a technique — they provide a space of calm connection where you can tune in to your body and your baby, without fear or pressure.

At Eca Brady in Marylebone, I offer compassionate, evidence-informed treatments to support women through every stage of pregnancy — from fertility and early gestation to birth preparation and postpartum care.

If your baby is breech and you’d like to explore gentle, natural support, I’d be honoured to guide you through a safe, soothing course of acupuncture and moxibustion provide more than just a method.
